Winning Wednesday: Leadership Series
PART TWO
Leaders are Lighthouses!
I’m fascinated with lighthouses—the way they look, their operation, and especially their purpose. I’ve had the privilege of visiting a few lighthouses while vacationing in Florida. Each one is unique, yet very similar in design and function. Did you know the very first lighthouse was built in 280 B.C. in Alexandria, Egypt? Now that is some kind of history!
While researching about lighthouses, I came across the following excerpts from ponceinlet.org:
“A lighthouse is a tower topped with a very bright light called a beacon. The beacon is used by sailors to help guide their ship at night. No matter where it is located the purpose of a lighthouse is always the same; to warn ships of danger and guide them safely on their way.”
Wow! A lighthouse is not just any kind of light, but it is a very bright light—a beacon! It can be seen from miles away because of the intensity of its light. It serves as a warning, but also as a guide to safe passage. Lighthouses can be seen even when ships are unaware of potential danger, and they safely guide us on our journey to success.
Yes, leaders are lighthouses! Bright beacons of light illuminating the path for others. Leaders see what others can’t see, can see farther than others can see, and should guide others on their path to reach their potential.
One final quote from ponceinlet.org: “…lighthouses continue to serve as symbols of hope to this day.” That is a “drop the mic” statement about lighthouses, and it should also be our mantra as leaders.
Today, be a beacon of hope to someone on their journey!
