What’s Next?
“For you have spoken…”. [2 Samuel 7:29]
What’s next? This question was asked many times around our house in the last several days. As I helped my wife take down the Christmas trees and all the decorations, I repeatedly asked, “What’s next?” As excited as I was for Christmas, I get anxious for the decorations to come down once all the festivities are over.
I often asked this question during my professional career. What’s the next move? What’s the next location? What’s the next opportunity for promotion? Even now, post-retirement, I find myself asking the same question. It can be exhausting!
What about you? Are you wondering what’s next? Perhaps not consciously, but in the back of your mind you might be asking: What’s next for my career? What’s next for my business? What’s next for my spouse? What’s next for my family? What’s next for my health? What’s next in 2024? What’s next, God, what’s next? The list goes on and on.
King David asked this question, albeit subconsciously, when he wanted to build a house for the Ark of God. However, the prophet Nathan informed him that his son would be the one to build it. Furthermore, God promised David that a descendant of his would sit on the throne of Israel forever. That is a lasting promise!
Upon hearing this news from Nathan, King David prayed a bold prayer to God thanking Him for all that He had done for David and his family. He continued by thanking God for the promises given to him regarding his family and his throne. Then King David utters this, “For you have spoken, and when you grant a blessing to your servant, O Sovereign Lord, it is an eternal blessing!”
Perhaps the answer to our question, “What’s next?”, is embedded in this small phrase from David’s prayer. Our trust in the One who speaks and delivers on His promises is more important than the answer to our question. When God promises, He delivers! He has promised to be with us forever, and He knows exactly “what’s next!” We can trust that promise!
It’s 2024, what’s next?
