Is It Time For An Eye Exam?
“…and they saw only Jesus.” [Matthew 17:8]
That time of the year is approaching for my annual eye examination. I do not dread this appointment because there are no needles or “pain” associated with seeing the eye doctor. However, I am always fearful that she will tell me that I need new stronger glasses. No more 20/20 vision for me these days.
What about you? How is your vision? If you are anything like me, our vision changes as we get more mature (older!). Objects that used to be clear have somehow become blurry over the years – especially printed materials. No longer can I read a restaurant’s menu without reaching first for my glasses, but what a difference those lenses make! The words come into focus and I know exactly what to order!
Peter, James, and John were on a mountain with their friend, Jesus. While on the mountain top, their eyes watched as Jesus’ face “shone like the sun.” Two other people appeared out of nowhere and began having a conversation with Him. Suddenly, a cloud overshadowed Jesus and the other two men. Next thing you know, Peter, James, and John hear a voice talking to them from the cloud. As you can imagine, they felt terrified by what their eyes saw and their ears heard, causing them to fall face down to the ground. Their vision was no longer clear because their eyes were closed in fear. Jesus, not wanting to leave them in that condition, came to them and touched them. When they looked up, their vision was clear. The cloud was gone, and they saw only Jesus.
When a cloud appears on your horizon, what do you do? When you feel overwhelmed by life’s circumstances, do you close your eyes in fear? Perhaps we need a vision correction. Instead of seeing the size of the problem, try focusing on the size of our God!
