Who is Your Protector?

“The Lord is my rock, my fortress, and my Savior; my God is my rock, in whom I find protection. He is my shield, the power that saves me, and my place of safety.”  [Psalm 18:2]

Where were you on 9/11? I’m certain all of us remember exactly where we were when we heard the devastating news that a plane had crashed into one of the twin towers in New York City. As soon as we began processing that, the news reported that a second plane had crashed into the second tower. We know what happened after that: a plane crashed into the Pentagon and another plane destined for an intended target crashed in Pennsylvania after heroic passengers determined that plane would not reach its target.

Two days ago, we remembered the events of 9/11. While many of us recall that day, there are countless others still suffering the loss of family and friends. Too many are still living with the physical, psychological, and emotional damage caused due to these terrorist attacks.

In the aftermath of that day, while the sky was quiet and with no planes flying, there was the sound of churches ringing their bells calling people to pray. People tried to find answers in the rubble of shattered lives and buildings. For those living in the United States, we worried about the potential of another attack and questioned our sense of security.

To what or to whom did you turn on that day and the days following? Was it a substance? The government? A god? God?

David had been on the run for a long time from King Saul. Yet he knew the one and only source of true security, safety, and protection – God! David knew that he could trust Him no matter how dire the situation. That is why he expressed His confidence in the above-mentioned Psalm.

Hopefully, America will never experience anything close to those horrific events again. Nonetheless, we will all experience life – illness, tragedy, loss, difficulties, etc. None of us are immune from the challenging events of everyday living.

In those moments, in what or whom will you place your trust?
