Which One: Rock or Sand?
“The words I speak to you are not incidental additions to your life, homeowner improvements to your standard of living. They are foundational words, words to build a life on.” [Matthew 7:24]
Sandcastles…I’ve never built a single one! However, when my wife and I would vacation in Myrtle Beach, I was fascinated by the sandcastles that children, and sometimes adults, would build. Some were simple and others extremely detailed. But there was one thing that was guaranteed: When we walked on the beach the next morning, every one of those sandcastles were washed away by the tide of the ocean. Why? They did not have a foundation to secure them to the sand.
Contrast sandcastles to some of the world’s tallest structures—the Burj Khalifa, the Sears Tower, etc. These buildings have a solid foundation that reaches into the bedrock of the ground. These structures can withstand big and small storms that come against them.
Our lives are like structures—they need a foundation on which to stand. We get to decide whether the type of foundation is rock or sand.
As Jesus was wrapping up His teaching to the people on this particular occasion, He talked about the foundation on which to build one’s life. He taught the people that they could be wise and build their lives on solid rock. In the event that the rain pours, the river floods, and a tornado hits, their lives could withstand the torment because their foundation was built on the rock. However, Jesus went on to say that if you just take His words and do not apply them to your life on a daily basis, it is like building your life on sand—a mere sandcastle. When the storms of life come, the rain, floods, and wind will beat against your life and it will “collapse with a mighty crash.”
These words and advice are still relevant to us today! The one who created you also wants to be the architect for your life. He wants to share His foundational plans with you so you can build a superstructure for your life. The choice is yours!
