Trick or Trust

“Trust in the Lord with all your heart; do not depend on your own understanding.  Seek His will in all you do, and He will show you which path to take.” [Proverbs 3:5-6]

So, do you like Halloween?  Regardless of your opinion, we are familiar with the question that is asked countless times on that night:  “Trick or treat?”  When I was growing up, Halloween was considered a “fun” night and an opportunity to get as many Tootsie Rolls or mini Snickers as possible.  We would run from door to door asking the same question, hoping to score a treat and not a trick.

It’s too bad that Halloween has been hijacked; its focus seems to have turned from fun to evil.  Nonetheless, thinking about Halloween caused me to ponder a similar yet more important question:  Trick or trust?

Many think of the devil merely as a caricature running around in a red costume, holding a pitchfork in one hand with two horns coming out of his head.  Unfortunately, he is a real being who disguises himself much more subtly than that.  He portrays himself as someone we should trust.  He attempts to get us to listen to his voice by distorting the truth ever so slightly.  For example, way back in the beginning of time, he posed this question to earth’s first human inhabitants: “Did God really say…”?  He finished the question by making it sound like truth, but he twisted it just enough to plant a seed of doubt in them.

The good news is that we have a standard of truth by which we can measure anything that is spoken to us!  The above text instructs us to “trust in the Lord” with our whole heart.  Why?  Unfortunately, the world tries telling us that truth is relative.  But the wisest human who ever lived tells us to “trust in the Lord” for every situation of life.

Sounds like we have a choice to make: Accept what the world attempts to trick us into believing, or trust that what God says is actually the truth.

Is it time to evaluate your trick or trust bag and see what it contains?
