The Questions of Christmas: Part 3

“Where is He who has been born King of the Jews?”  [Matthew 2:2 – The Message]

If you were asked about the one thing in which you search for the most, what would it be?  Perhaps a better question might be: Who or What are you searching for more than anything else?  Those two questions conjure up a lot of emotions, passion, ideas, and perhaps even some resentment.

When I was dating my future spouse 31+ years ago, I didn’t know I was searching for “her,” but she found me!  She captured my attention, my energy, my passion, and my heart.  At Christmas time, I would search for the perfect gifts for her—not because I enjoy shopping at Christmas, but because I wanted her to know I searched all over for just the right gifts.

I’ve always been intrigued by the journey of the magi who went searching for the “star” they saw in the eastern sky.  It was not a fast trip! Imagine riding a camel for months in search of the star.  Yes, the magi somehow knew what a lot of others didn’t know at that time: The star was more than a light in the nighttime sky.  This star signaled the arrival of a baby, and not just any baby.  This baby’s birth had been foretold 700 years earlier!  They had studied and learned about the time of this baby’s potential arrival on earth, and they went searching for him.  Fortunately, they knew enough to look in the sky for the star that would guide them.

Why is it that the magi were the only ones who apparently saw this star?  Is it possible they were actually “searching” for the star?  The star lit up the sky but not everyone saw it.  Yet, the magi did and followed it to the very place where they found the Messiah, King of the Jews.

What gift are you so desperately searching for that you would go to extreme lengths to find?  Is it just another gift to give someone?  Are you searching for peace? A relationship?  Friendship?  What about the “gift” that would heal that broken relationship or marriage?

Whatever you are searching for this Christmas, Jesus has already arrived on the scene.  All you have to do is seek and you will find Him – the baby in the manger – the Christ of Christmas!

For what or whom are you searching this Christmas?
