Lessons from the Beach: Part III
What Did You Say?
“He (Jesus) got up, rebuked the wind and said to the waves, ‘Quiet! Be Still!’” [Mark 4:39]
The day started out rainy and windy, but is there really a bad day at the beach? Since we were only at Myrtle Beach for a few more days, my wife and I decided to bundle up and go for walk despite the wind and rain. Trying to have meaningful conversation was challenging. Often, my wife would attempt to say something to me at the very moment the waves crashed loudly. Immediately, I would respond, “What did you say?” There was no way I could hear her voice in the midst of the raging ocean and wind.
Jesus and His disciples were in a boat rowing to the other side of the lake. Suddenly, a fierce storm blew up and the disciples feared for their lives. High waves crashed into the boat and unless something changed quickly, they were not going to survive. But Jesus was asleep! Can you imagine sleeping at a time like that? The storm raged so violently that the disciples had a hard time hearing Jesus speak peace over their circumstance.
Have you been there…the “storms” of life? The waves crashing! The storm raging! Unless something changes soon, you feel like you won’t make it. The storm threatens to overwhelm us, making it difficult to hear the voice of the One who calms raging storms. In the midst of these circumstances, Jesus still speaks.
Can you hear His voice speaking to you in your storm?
