Are You Royalty?
“Mephibosheth bowed low and exclaimed, ‘Who is your servant, that you should show such kindness to a dead dog like me?’” [2 Samuel 9:8]
Royalty! The world is fascinated with royalty! The largest UK TV audience for a royal wedding occurred in 1981 when Prince Charles married Lady Diana Spencer. The world stopped the day Princess Diana was laid to rest. The world was glued to their TVs or internet when the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge were married in 2011.
Thousands of years ago, when kings ruled countries, they wielded authority with an iron-clad fist. When a new king ascended to the throne, it was common for them to annihilate the entire family line of the previous king. Imagine how Mephibosheth must have felt! King Saul and his son Jonathan (Mephibosheth’s dad) were killed in battle and the successor had been pronounced – King David. However, King David was different. He was a king who loved God and followed His commands. One day, a thought raced across King David’s synapsis that perhaps there were some living relatives of King Saul. King David was informed that Jonathan’s son, Mephibosheth, was still alive. As the grandson of King Saul, Mephibosheth had lived a very challenging life after being crippled in both feet as an infant.
Not only was Mephibosheth crippled physically, but he was crippled emotionally, psychologically, and spiritually. He was full of shame, self-pity, condemnation, and humiliation. Now he was being summoned to appear before the king, and he knew what that meant – execution!
If we read the rest of the story, King David shocks Mephibosheth! Instead of killing him, he treats him kindly. Furthermore, he treats Mephibosheth as royalty! For the rest of his life, Mephibosheth will eat his meals at the king’s table! His needs will always be provided for from now on. His physical limitations don’t matter! He is restored! Mephibosheth no longer feels ashamed, humiliated, embarrassed, or condemned. King David pronounces him as ROYALTY!!
If the Kings of Kings summoned you to have an audience with Him, how would you feel? If you are anything like me, there are moments when I would feel exactly like Mephibosheth! Maybe that is why I like this story so much, because I see myself in Mephibosheth. What about you?
The King of Kings wants to free all of us from our past! He paid the price! He made a way! He offers all of us an invitation to the royal table.
Have you accepted the invitation?
